US Prison Abuses Could Be War Crimes: ICRC

Students have a daunting task to sweep the Baghdad streets

CAIRO, August 5 (IslamOnline.net) - The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) described the US abuses against detainees of the Guantanamo Bay detention camp as war crimes, reported a British daily on Thursday, August 5.

The ICRC accusations against the US came after three British detainees, known as the Tipton Three and released from the US base in Cuba, disclosed that they were beaten, shackled and photographed naked by the US soldiers, The Guardian said.

The Tipton Three were arrested in Afghanistan and held at the US detention camp in Cuba for two years, before they were set free in March without charge.

The world organization branded the inhuman treatment of the US soldiers against the Guantanamo detainees as a grave breach to the third Geneva convention, the British newspaper said.

"Some of the abuses alleged by the detainees would indeed constitute inhuman treatment," said Florian Westphal, ICRC spokesman in Geneva.

"Inhuman treatment constitutes a grave breach of the third Geneva convention and these are often also described as war crimes," he added.

The Medical Foundation for the Care of Victims of Torture had joined the ICRC in accusing the US soldiers of adopting systematic abuse against the Guantanamo detainees, mounting them to torture.

The US Defense Department, however, denied the accusations, highlighting the detainees are treated "humanly, properly and in accordance with the terms of the Geneva conventions."

"All detainees are treated humanely, appropriately and in accordance with the principles of the third Geneva convention," said major Michael Shavers, the Pentagon spokesman on Guantanamo Bay.

In June, the HRW issued a report entitled "The Road To Abu Ghraib" linking the abuse of detainees in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantanamo to the policies adopted by US President George W. Bush  in his so-called war on terror.
