UK Families Sue Blair for War Crimes in Iraq: Paper

The complaint gained weight after London admitted that the cluster bombs in Iraq had an “unacceptably high failure rate”. (Reuters)

CAIRO, May 8, 2005 (IslamOnline.net & News Agencies) – The families of ten British soldiers killed in Iraq lodged a complaint with the International Criminal Court (ICC) accusing Prime Minister Tony Blair of committing war crimes in the occupied Arab country, a leading British newspaper reported on Sunday, May 8.

The bereaved families said British troops were unlawfully ordered to use cluster bombs near Iraqi civilian areas, killing Iraqi civilians and destroying essential power supplies, The Independent said.

The complaint has been given added weight after new admissions by the British Ministry of Defense that the cluster bombs used by British troops had an “unacceptably high failure rate”.

On Tuesday, May 3, the families threatened to take Blair to court for “lying” over reasons he gave for taking the country to war.

The decision to take legal action was made after reading pre-war advice from the government's top lawyer, Attorney General Lord Goldsmith, which raised doubts over the invasion's illegality, Shiner said.

In a 13-page legal advice to Blair March 7, 2003, Goldsmith said military action against Iraq was likely to be challenged under international law based on a number of counts.

A leaked government memo revealed on Saturday, May 1, that Blair had already committed himself to a regime change in Iraq by force eight months before the invasion-turned-occupation of the oil-rich Arab country.
