CAIRO,
May 14, 2005 (IslamOnline.net) – In a new damning report, Amnesty
International accused the Bush administration of disregarding basic
human rights and international legal obligation in its so-called war
on terror.
It
also underlined that rights violations are the inevitable result of
“hypocrisy” and “over-arching war mentality” which
characterize Washington’s war, according to Amnesty’s Web site.
The
report, Guantanamo and beyond: The continuing pursuit of unchecked
executive power, further accused the US administration of “seeking
to block judicial review” of Guantanamo detainees.
It
stressed that nearly a year since the States Supreme Court ruled that
US courts have the jurisdiction to consider appeals from Guantanamo
detainees, “not a single detainee has had the lawfulness of his
detention judicially reviewed”.
Amnesty
asked the Bush administration to bring Guantanamo and any other
detention camp it is operating outside the country “into full
compliance with international law and standards” or “close them
down”.
